I almost did a very sad thing today. I stopped it before it happened and, in the process, kept a promise to myself! How sad that too often I make promises to myself I never keep.
In this drive I explore a pair of left side exit and entrance ramps that I have passed dozens of times throughout my life. Left side exits are rare in general, but especially rare in West Virginia where most of our highways were constructed post 1950s. These two are traveled even less because they connect two interstates in directions that few people would ever need to take. For example if you are going from Elkview to Parkersburgh and decided to take the interstate instead of surface streets you would take one way. The other way can take you the busy Sissonville to Mink Shoals route that no one has ever needed to take. So these two exits have sat mocking me as I take every other possible exit on the highway system around where I live. The last time I came through I decided enough was enough and I would take the damn exit just to do it. I was in a hurry and missed it so rather than turn around I promised myself I would take it next time I was in the area unless a life threatening emergency were to come up. Well today I’m passing through and no emergency, but I almost passed it up because… “Who the fuck cares about an exit no one takes”. Well I care, especially about keeping promises to myself!
How many promises have I made in my life for inconsequential things like this and just broke them. Broke a promise to myself! Is it no wonder I don’t trust myself sometimes, I mean I lie to myself right? Plus how sad that I basically ask myself for permission and tell myself I don’t deserve to do something! So I took those damn exits and saw a plane landing beautiful as day when I did. A sign from the heavens that I did the right thing. More importantly I felt like I did the right thing. Now I trust myself a little more!
