We are all human; therefore, nothing human can be alien to us.

We are all human; therefore, nothing human can be alien to us.

Maya Angelou was inspired by the Roman playwright Terence, who originally wrote, “Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto.” or “I am human, and I consider nothing human alien to me.” I think about this quote a lot. To me it means that: the depths of perversion and evil humans have committed to date is all just as normal as the art, literature, healing, and progress we have built as a society. Anyone is capable of doing anything another human has done. All of reality is a 1% variance on complete chaos in a sense, and the whole of human potential is surely not more than a 1-5% variance on average. Even the brain of the most incapacitated human, if it can keep the body living, would be doing more than lower capacity animals. Perhaps more than our best computer technology currently, but that is only temporary, I am sure.

When I ever begin to think I am “better” than another or even a “good” person I remember that the most twisted individuals had many in their orbit believing they were “good” too. The really messed up thing is they are right! No one is good or bad, and if you can classify them into either category easily it is probably because you do not know the person. We people are complicated, and to be fair our other examples of life are not nearly so easy to classify either.

Know this, the best most trusted person you know would sell you out if they were tortured long enough. Everything has a price, but that is not to say be nihilistic. I have heard “life is a garden, dig it” & “life is a game, play it”. How about “life is a horror, fuck it!”… not the attitude I choose to take with my life. Not anymore that is!
