Listening with purpose

When you listen to others are you listening to all they have to say? Or do you find yourself doing like me and listening until you hear something that makes you want to talk and then focusing on what you want to say rather than listening to the speaker?

I do a lot more of the latter, but I want to be a better active listener. I am going to make a concerted effort to wait on interjecting into a conversation until I have given the speaker time to finish their thought. Then I am going to repeat back what I think they said. Then I am going to take a breath plan what I want to say and then say it!

I will be reporting back in with my success and failures in this endeavor. I have great hope that it will make me a better listener and help me get to my next big project: Knowing when it is a person is a willing participant in a teachable moment.
