Manipulation as a positive trait

A wise fellow in a treatment facility told me once that if I wanted to stay sober, I would have to approach the rest of my life using all the tools at my disposal. He elaborated that most addicts excel at manipulation, but they use it as a weapon. Manipulation used as a tool to create the environment you need to survive is not a weapon.

I am even referring to the manipulation of people, but here it needs to be a side effect and not the desired outcome. What if you convince a friend that is closing themselves away to come out with you to the store. If you knew of their increase in isolation, and you wanted some company; more effort than a passing remark would help. It helps to not be a mother hen and to remember people do not want to be pushed out of their comfort zone.

You are expending your capitol in the relationship every time you make a request of another person. It is important to remember the value others have to us in society and see the interconnection between us and others. We all live on one spherical spaceship traveling the cosmos together here on Earth. Let’s make it a nice journey!
