Mountain People vs. Valley People

Mountain People vs. Valley People

People in the Appalachian Mountains will tell you “There are two types of people” it may come as a surprise that more often than not it is where they live. On a hill, or by a river… Mountain People or Valley People as I call them. What is important to remember is both are good people in general, like any other group. In fact:

The link above is to a news story about the battle of Blair Mountain. West Virginia residents of both types participated in ensuring labor rights were won and recognized by mine companies and the US Government. Those rights were written in blood and tears.

Just a quick aside, but a little about the distinction. It refers entirely to where the person has made their home. At different times I have been both. Currently I am a river person. River people live in the valley. They take life as it is handed to them. They go with the flow so to speak. Mountain folks are fortified, their abodes are easily defended and more private. They tend to be more guarded emotionally for some reason as well.

If you are a hill folk or a valley folk I still love you! Thank you for riding with me!
