This is one of my favorite routes that I am grateful to take as often as possible. This day almost ended in tragedeigh! I started this day off with a two-order pickup from Home Depot in South Charleston. I have been playing a game lately where unless it is clearly a rip off, I take the longer orders. This was the highest paying and longest order at about 34 miles as the crow flies and was paying $40. It was in all reality about 60 miles total and paid $50 so not the end of the world. The first part of the trip was through Alum Creek and Tornado to Saint Albans. I took Green View Road to Smith Creek and followed Dry Ridge into Saint Albans. The turn from Laural Road onto South Walnut is stunning in my opinion! The view from the mountain top of the valley below makes you feel large and powerful. Surely what a King must have felt looking down on the valley below. Like it was all created just for you!
Next, I had to double back to Alum Creek and take Rable Mountain Road to Emmons, Ashford, Nellis, and eventually back across the river from Emmons. This is a stretch of Boone County that lies along the Big Coal River. I always try to go this way weather permitting because you really feel alone and small on this route. The tall mountains almost seem to be pointing at you as you cower along isolated riverbanks. Old coal mines and abandoned houses are along the route. Always up in the hills among the trees you will find the people living really rough.
