I have been trying to stop myself when I feel like I am getting too negative. Which as a human is frequent, but I am getting better at doing it. Being aware of it is the first thing. I generally catch myself feeling like everything is “Shitty” like that South Park episode. The mental image that pops in my head is that I am a duck in a suit spraying shit out of my mouth at all times when I am a negative Nancy. So I laugh at myself a little. Then I try to find easy inspirational positive things in my current environment to notice. Noticing positive things in my immediate environment (i.e. a child, pet, or elderly couple) usually will give me the “aww’s” enough to change my mindset. The Middle Lane Feels Safe.
If I am alone or that doesn’t work, I try to think of something that I am grateful about in my current environment. Is the weather nice? If not, maybe I am inside where it is warm. Maybe I am in my home, and I am always grateful to have one of those. Don’t get me started on my family, car, and job. Always something to be grateful for. A wise man told me that “if you have nothing else to be grateful for and you take a shit, be grateful you have toilet paper!”. File that under things I learned in rehab, but I digress…
That is it, at that point I almost always start being more positive and want to complain less. It also helps to be forgiving of others as much as possible. Don’t be stupid about it, but other people have their own lives and value things that you don’t so their priorities are not the same as yours. If you are upset that someone doesn’t care about something that affects you then you probably are not going to inspire sympathy from them by being resentful. Remember, the Middle Lane Feels Safe, as it provides balance.
