I talk a lot about changing perspective and mindset, because it is what has truly changed my life for the better. I can think of no better metaphor for changing your perspective than the change in elevation I experience while traveling my home state. For a long period of time, I stayed living in the valley swallowed up by the steep imposing mountain sides. I was scared to climb up high, I thought I was happy and safe in my valley. Then the floods, landslides, and tornadic fronts followed my valley from end to end, and I could no longer feel safe. I knew what danger awaited me where I was, so I began to search. I had to get out of the valley!
I climbed up the mountain side, which was the scariest thing I ever did. I took a flying leap UP to the top of the mountain, because I couldn’t afford the slow climb. I would chicken out and turn around. If I failed at reaching the top it would be easy to be satisfied with that failure. I would tell myself I almost died, and for what? To see something I haven’t seen yet, it probably isn’t that great anyway! No, I have no time to plan or think because the only thoughts that come are NO and CAN’T when I do. I run and leap as sure as anything I will reach the top. I do, I make it!
Now from the top I see the whole valley I was in, I should feel huge and powerful! I do, for a moment, but then I remember I was just down there in that valley appearing as the tiny dots I know are the others that live there. At once I have the perspective I need, I am large and powerful, but I must never forget I am small and weak! Now I have seen it all and I truly know what my world looks like. I thought I knew it from the ground looking up. Then I thought I knew it from the sky looking down. It was always both at the same time!
